Day 251 (8 Sep 2012) Snow White, or A Child’s Tale

As you probably know, I try to participate in as many of the photo challenges SeeingSpotsPhotography hosts/co-hosts, as they are fun, and almost always push the envelope of my skills and/or creativity level.  This month’s challenge was “to bring to life an image that represents both details from your favorite childhood tale AND your feeling about that part of the tale.”

After polling friends on Facebook for ideas, I settled on something to do with Snow White.  I picked the scene where the step mother/witch gives Snow the poised apple.  That was always the saddest part of the movie; betrayal by her own family.  These day’s that part is sadly not limited to a fairy tale; thousands of children are betrayed by their own families: violence, abuse, irresponsible decisions, etc.  Even in “good” families children are often neglected by parents who put career/success before family.  I do believe that most parents’ intent is to provide the best childhood for their kids, but never learned from their parents the best methods and are perpetuating the mistakes.  One thing I’m doing, well before I get married and start a family, is reading books about family, raising kids, being a good husband/man, and talking to/observing families I know.  I know I won’t be perfect, but I hope to build upon the many good things I learned from my parents and go forth from there.

Anyway, I didn’t intend to go off on a tangent, but anyway, here are the two images I created today.  I “like” the first one the best for this challenge, but the second is good too.  Which one do you think I should submit?  I’m also open to suggestions on editing these (not gonna reshoot), if you think a different technique could help them.

I had a different idea, but ended up getting home too late last night after the fair to try the idea I had with my friend, so I did this all solo; tripod, infrared remote, flashlight, and a bit of thread to hold the apple.

Day 229 (17 Aug 2012) Children at Play

Yup, I’m a day late, again!  It happens, and I’m sure you survived 😉

Friday night and today I was camping with the Royal Rangers boys at my church (my church has over 30 acres of woods, so it’s easier for the adults, and ‘realistic’ for the boys).  Friday the weather was great and the boys were playing on the lawn after cleaning up from dinner (camp-made stew).  I had to shoot this one at a high ISO (they move too fast for a long exposure, as you can imagine), so I did a B&W conversion and dropped the noise.

I’m still downloading today’s photos, so they will go up tomorrow, with Sunday’s photos 🙂

Day 201 (19 July 2012) Egg-celent Shadows

A few days a go I read a post on the Photofocus blog about lighting.  It suggested using a light source and an egg to see how different positions and distances for the light would affect the image.  So last time I went grocery shopping I bought a half dozen eggs, cooked with 5 tonight and kept the other for my practice.

Here are some of the shots I found interesting.  However, I did learn a bit about how the light envelops, or doesn’t, the subject.  I would like to do this exercise again, with more time, to really just study it.  I can’t say I’m ready to go buy a bunch of studio lights, but I have a little bit better understanding of how distance and angle affect the image, and can try to use this in my photography 🙂

I’ll probably also submit one of these to the Silhouette photo challenge, which I highly encourage you to join!

Day 199 (17 July 2012) Shadows in the Dark

Was helping a friend replace his starter tonight after work, and as normal, the repair when longer than planned (due to having the wrong part and having to go back out for the correct one), so we finished up by flashlight.  I had one of my lights pointing slightly under the car for light to see the tool pile, and I noticed that as it shone across the driveway, this row of seeds from the tree we worked under cast an interesting set of shadows.  So, I paused my help, grabbed the camera/tripod, and took the shot 🙂

Tomorrow is Day 200!  I will have to come up with something special to celebrate!  So, come back and see what happens!
