Day 310 (5 Nov 2012) Runway Nights

This weekend I was out shooting with a friend and we drove by the Groton – New London Airport and she pointed out that at night the airport runway was lit with the blue lights marking the runway paths every night.  I had never even thought about that; I was surprised to learn it was open/lit at night; it is a very small regional airport.  So tonight I headed that way to see what it was like.

I did find the runway all lit up, and pulled over and set up my tripod right up near the fence.  As I was shooting, I was a little concerned that a police officer might pass by and tell me to stop.  Not that I was breaking any rules that I know of, but in this day and age, people can be paranoid.

Since there was no real foreground interest items to focus on, I decided to play with the focus and crop/composition to try and be creative.  In Lightroom, I played with the white balance and saturation to change the colors a bit.  I found that the level, in-focus shots were boring.  So I broke rules 🙂  You can see part of the fence I shot through, but I like what it does.

Day 227 (14 Aug 2012) A Walk Around The Block

I was in New London, CT this evening to attend a graduation ceremony for an employment class I taught a lesson in.  I arrived early and decided to just go for a walk with my trusty camera.  I ended up just circling the block.  My initial intent was to shoot the sun behind the steeple of the church where the ceremony was held, but as I walked, I noticed an old guard rail for a basement access of one of the old buildings that populate the are.  I then took several more photos as I went on this short walk.  I was glad that it was empty so I could shoot w/o distraction 🙂

Day 189 Part II – Sail Fest 2012

Here are some more photos I took yesterday, but didn’t get a chance to look at/process/post.  If you missed my fireworks photos from yesterday, you should check them out!  If you’ve never shot fireworks and want a quick tutorial, I can post one, or you can google one of the dozens that are out there, just let me know 🙂

Day 189 (7 July 2012) Fireworks! – SailFest 2012

Today Was spent enjoying the festivities of SailFest 2012 here in the Groton/New London, CT area.  I started the morning watching the OpSail 2012, which is a parade of “tall ships” including the Coast Guard Cutter, Eagle, a US Navy amphib, and several others.  Then I went to downtown New London to see the street fair, then back to the Groton side for the fireworks!

Below are a few of my Fireworks images, but I did shoot all the events of the day (though it’s now past midnight, so I’m not gonna review/edit all 200+ photos from today right now!). I think tomorrow I’ll do a supplement with other images from the day, and maybe a brief tutorial on how I shoot fireworks (based on tutorials I’ve read, and my limited experience).

Day 177 (25 June 2012) Gold Star Sunset

All day today and most of the afternoon thunderstorms rolled through New England, and when the weather turned nice in the late afternoon, I knew I had to try for a sunset with the clouds that remained!  I was going to try and shoot from the beach, until I realized that the sun sets over land this time of year over here (the CT shore is south facing), so I drove along the river and saw this view and fell in love.

An interesting thing happened while I was setting up my tripod these two guys started walking from across the street towards me.  It was a purposeful walk, and this isn’t high-income housing (not poor, either), so I get slightly nervous as they approached.  I was hoping they owned the business of the parking lot I was borrowing or local concerned citizens.  I was wrong.  The older of the two guys used to be a pro photographer and lived across the street and was curious about what I was shooting!  We shot the breeze for about 30 or so minutes until the bugs got too bad and the light was fading.  It was a cool experience 🙂

Day 154 (2 June 2012) Eastern Point Fog

This morning was very rainy, but by mid afternoon the rain had stopped, but a good fog remained, so a friend and I headed to Eastern Point in Groton, CT to shoot.  Then we went to a good sushi dinner then back near the point to shoot again.  It’s hard to not have a good day when it includes photography and sushi 🙂

Day 140 (19 May 2012) Loneliness

Tonight I went on a photo shoot in down-town New London, CT, for a photo calling put on by Artbycamila  The challenge is “Red” & “Loneliness”.  I came  up with an idea for the image and my friend agreed to model for me.

My plan was to have her crouched near a building, and using a long exposure, have people walking past her, showing blurred people w/ her being sharp and in focus.  I wasn’t able to get the image I was after.  There were not a lot of people out, like I had hoped, but I did ask a couple of guys to walk in front of the lens a couple times, but as you can see, they don’t show up in the image.  I’m not sure If I need more people, or just to have them walk real slow, or do it in daylight.  This is my first attempt at doing this kind of shot, and I guess I need to experiment some more 🙂  However, I am pleased with the finished image, but not sure if it will be my final submission.

Day 135 (15 May 2012) Bank Street, New London, CT

Tonight I was down in New London for the first session of Work and Learn, where I will be teaching a class on personal finance in a couple months.  Work and Learn‘s mission is to, “… help unemployed and underemployed adults develop their mind, body, social skills, and spirit[i] to be able to contribute to their families and community.”

It was raining all day and night so I took the opportunity before I left for home to shoot Bank Street (during a brief break in the rain).  On the weekend, this street is packed with people visiting the reasutraunts and bars, but on a rainy Tuesday, there were few people out.

Part of my reason for wanting to shoot here was to scout it for a photo challenge hosted by artbycamila.  Keep a look out for that post coming up 🙂

I was going to try the 2011 washed away leaving 2012 written in the sand, but it was night by the time I made it to the beach and the waves were very small with short intervals (not enough time to write the 2011, and shoot it in this light).  All lighting is natural to Ocean Beach in New London, CT, where this was shot, and it is actually quite dark here, dark enough to need a flash light to set up the camera.

Let me know what you think of this shot, and/or ask any questions you may have!

Enjoy!
