Driving home this evening it was darker than I expected, probably because I’m not use to not having Day Light Savings (after all, its been less than a day!). But I did notice a nice color on the horizon, so I pulled down to a boat launch near some rail road tracks I’ve shot at before and fired off a few ’rounds’. 🙂
I just realized it’s been a while since I’ve broken out my macro lens; I miss shooting macro! Keep your eyes open for a macro shoot this week!
Today I took the scenic route home from church, which ironically is shorter distance-wise than the ‘normal’ route. As I was driving and enjoying the fall sunshine and scattered clouds in the sky, I saw a sign for a boat ramp I had not explored yet. So hit the brakes, hoping they guy behind me was paying attention and cranked the wheel to aim my car down the heavily potted road down to the river. I parked, took a stroll to the tracks that parallel the river, and did a little shooting. As you probably know, I have a thing for trains and rail road tracks (I have several posts that feature rail road tracks, such as this, this, and this.)

Ever since I was a kid I had a fascination with trains and rail roads, maybe because my dad had model (HO) trains as his hobby, or just because I’m a boy, and it’s part of the X chromosome 🙂 So tonight after visiting my friend in Norwich, I took a slight detour to some rails I’ve shot before. I went to a different location this time and found multiple sets, most of which were abandoned. I shot for a little while (would have gone a lot longer, but it was getting late) and headed home.
Now that I’m home, I got to play with my newest “toy”; Lightroom 4. I just installed it this afternoon and after my first use, I love the new features! If you use LR3 and you get the opportunity to upgrade, do it! I wouldn’t have done it except I was able to find the student version on sale (take a low price and reduce it more, and I’m ok w/ it!). If I made my living with my camera, it would be a no-brainer. But if you are just a hobbyist, like myself, LR3 is still a very powerful and awesome photo editor! But anyway, here are some of my images from tonight:

Tonight on my way home, I took a detour along a road with some old warehouses and discovered a set of track between them and the river. I just had to stop! I love trains and rail roads, and night shooting, and old brick buildings and water. I found them all in once place!!

The truck you see in the photo below is an oil deliver truck. Many homes in the North East US rely on home heating oil for winter heat. It’s much more expensive to heat a home with electric here, and unless you live in a natural gas supplied area, it’s either wood or oil. The “oil” is just un-taxed diesel fuel. Many homes (mine included) also use oil to make hot water for showers, etc.

So I probably should appologize for yesterday’s posting, but I’m not. This is MY blog, after all 😉
But seriously, I spent the day with my gf, and since it was our Valenties Day, spending any time in “photography” would have been to have ignored her. Even though she is a budding photog, too, yeasterday was “us” time. But I didn’t want to miss a day on this project, so I comprimised by snaping a pic of the dipping oil as we were about to leave the resturaunt.
But now back to using my real camera vice my old Droid Eris. The photo’s from today were taken at the same location that I wanted to shoot when I posted the “hope” shot on Thursday. It was 25F and windy today, so I didn’t want to linger, but I still hope that I was able to capture the beautiful sky and the Thames river. I will try the night version again, so stay tuned!
